Sky Soldiers

They wake, ears roiled for the signal
then begin to fly.

Scant fields below
lie naked against the marauding soldiers.

Riding a winter night's fifth column
weightless silence raids the torpid earth
forming snow monuments
forest elegies stark as lilies urned for ceremony.

The wind laughs.
Layers upon layers of soldiers mound
in epidemic ridges
crystal wrinkles the length of human imagination
weave helter skelter.

Then the night is done.

The moon turns low.
The subtleness of new morn reveals
a disarranged triumph.
The sky soldiers sleep.
